Funk rhythm is the foundation of the Essence of Ape sound. All of our songs build directly on a chemistry between drums and bass, and these instruments rarely take a back seat in the mix. The drum fills and the slap bass always come through loud and clear. The guitar and the keyboard wail through in the higher frequencies, usually in a bluesy way. Finally, Baker gives his sermon from the top of this great mountain of sound: strange and poetic verses that talk about every day experience.
That is how we see it working.
EOA pays homage to the sound of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cream, Mountain, Procol Harum, and 90s grunge. Improvisation is a key focus, both at shows and in the writing/recording process. With good on-stage communication, we try new things on the spot.
Our secret is the diversity and scope of our individual musical tastes. We take bits and echoes of music we like and patch it all together, filling in the gaps with the mortar of our creativity. Our style is not the sound you hear in one scene or another.
